THE SAMPAN LAYAR

Crewed by the Orang Suku Laut from Berakit, Naga Langit, the air dragon was a 7 meter Traditional sampan layar built for racing.
The art is unfortunately disappearing, but a few yearly races remain in Riau. The aim is to revive the art, both in exhibition sailing, and eventually racing provincially.

First, I bought the old little fishing sampan and we made some sails, the same as a jong rig and experimented with sailing them. We introduced them for racing during an event. It was amateur and almost embarrassing. But it was the start to lead to a proper sailing kolek.
