LONG DISTANCE SAILING WITH A JONG ON THE 3RD OF OCTOBER 2014
Jong crossing from Nikoi to Bintan
With Zakir we wanted to try to take a jong and let it go in the open ocean with some descent waves to see if the jong design would be suited for open ocean sailing.
So we brought “Planet”, my second jong after Bule Kampung, two jongs that i still have and cared for. Bule Kampung went riding on the open sea, i thought i had lost her, but a fisherman found her, and somehow they knew she was in my care.
But Planet needed a good story. So we rigged her conservatively and let her go. she sailed beautifully, with grace and proved that a jong are serious ocean going ships. She did capsized, only because i wanted better shots to document, and the non natural wave from the bow waves and 150hp engine was too much. she sailed for a couple of miles.
